Backed by the Mundipharma independent associated companies based in Cambridge, UK, the Science Ambassadors program has been active for over 10 years and, in that time, has reached more than 100,000 Cambridgeshire-based school children. The program aims to motivate the next generation of young scientists through an interactive approach to STEMM (science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine) education.
A number of staff from these Mundipharma companies have been trained as Science Ambassadors. They receive up to five paid volunteering days each year, through which they can share their passion for science with students at more than 100 schools in the Cambridge area. The scheme is led by a qualified teacher to ensure it fits with current curricula, while new resources are added as needed.
As well as teaching activities, the scheme gives career advice and work experience for secondary students, highlighting the different careers available in the pharmaceutical industry. It also provides upskilling opportunities for primary school teachers to engage in hands-on science activities. In addition, it has partnered with a number of events staged in the Cambridge, UK area, including Big Biology Day, the Cambridge Science Festival and the Fun Lab at the Big Weekend.
